Hygrocybe punicea
Species of fungus
Hygrocybe punicea, commonly known as the crimson waxcap, is a striking species of fungus in the family Hygrophoraceae. It is notable for its vibrant red coloration and waxy texture, which are characteristic of the waxcap group of fungi.
Description[edit | edit source]
The fruiting body of Hygrocybe punicea is distinguished by its bright crimson to scarlet cap, which can measure between 5 to 10 cm in diameter. The cap is initially convex, becoming more flattened with age, and often features a slightly depressed center. The surface is smooth and slightly sticky when moist, a common trait among waxcaps.
The gills are adnate to slightly decurrent, with a pale yellow to orange hue that contrasts with the cap. The stipe (stem) is cylindrical, measuring 5 to 10 cm in height and 1 to 2 cm in diameter, with a fibrous texture and a color that ranges from yellow to orange-red.
The spore print of Hygrocybe punicea is white, and the spores are ellipsoid, smooth, and measure approximately 7–9 by 4–5 µm.
Distribution and habitat[edit | edit source]
Hygrocybe punicea is found across temperate regions of the Northern Hemisphere, including Europe, North America, and parts of Asia. It typically grows in nutrient-poor, acidic grasslands, often in association with mosses. The species is considered an indicator of unimproved grassland habitats, which are increasingly rare due to agricultural intensification.
Ecology[edit | edit source]
As a member of the waxcap fungi, Hygrocybe punicea plays a role in the ecosystem as a decomposer, breaking down organic matter in the soil. It is often found in association with mosses, which may provide a microhabitat that supports its growth.
Conservation[edit | edit source]
The conservation status of Hygrocybe punicea varies by region. In some areas, it is considered a species of conservation concern due to habitat loss. Efforts to preserve its grassland habitat are crucial for maintaining its populations.
