Hyperbaric Oxygen Treatment

Hyperbaric oxygen treatment (HBOT) is a medical therapy that involves breathing pure oxygen in a pressurized room or chamber. This treatment is used to enhance the body's natural healing processes by increasing the amount of oxygen in the blood.

History[edit | edit source]

The use of hyperbaric oxygen therapy dates back to the 1600s, but it gained significant attention in the 20th century. The first hyperbaric chamber was built in 1662 by a British clergyman named Henshaw. The modern development of HBOT began in the 1950s when it was used to treat decompression sickness in divers.

Mechanism of Action[edit | edit source]

Hyperbaric oxygen treatment works by increasing atmospheric pressure, which allows the lungs to gather more oxygen than would be possible at normal air pressure. This increase in oxygen can help fight bacteria, stimulate the release of growth factors, and promote healing.

Medical Uses[edit | edit source]

HBOT is used to treat a variety of medical conditions, including:

Procedure[edit | edit source]

During a hyperbaric oxygen therapy session, the patient enters a hyperbaric chamber. The chamber is then sealed, and the pressure is increased to a level higher than normal atmospheric pressure. The patient breathes pure oxygen, which is delivered through a mask or a hood.

Side Effects[edit | edit source]

While generally safe, HBOT can have side effects, including:

  • Ear pain or discomfort due to pressure changes
  • Temporary vision changes
  • Fatigue

Controversies and Limitations[edit | edit source]

There are controversies surrounding the use of HBOT for conditions not approved by medical authorities. Some claims about its effectiveness for conditions like autism and cerebral palsy lack sufficient scientific evidence.
