iPad 2 is a tablet computer developed by Apple Inc. It is the second generation of the iPad line and was announced on March 2, 2011, by then-CEO Steve Jobs. The iPad 2 was released in the United States on March 11, 2011, and later rolled out to other countries. It built upon the original iPad's features with a slimmer design, faster processor, and improved graphics capabilities.

Design and Features[edit | edit source]

The iPad 2 features a 9.7-inch (diagonal) LED-backlit Multi-Touch display with IPS technology, offering a resolution of 1024x768 pixels at 132 pixels per inch (ppi). It is powered by a dual-core Apple A5 processor, enhancing its performance over its predecessor. The device comes in two variants: Wi-Fi only and Wi-Fi + 3G, with the latter offering cellular connectivity. It introduced cameras to the iPad line, featuring a front-facing VGA camera for FaceTime and video calling, and a rear-facing camera capable of recording 720p video.

The iPad 2's design is notably thinner and lighter than the original iPad. It measures 0.34 inch (8.8 mm) in thickness and weighs 1.33 pounds (601 grams) for the Wi-Fi model and 1.35 pounds (613 grams) for the Wi-Fi + 3G model. The device was available in black and white color options.

Software[edit | edit source]

The iPad 2 originally shipped with iOS 4.3, introducing several new features, including AirPlay mirroring and improvements to the Safari web browser. Over its lifespan, the iPad 2 received multiple iOS updates, with its final supported version being iOS 9.3.5. This extended software support period is notable, as it allowed the iPad 2 to receive updates for over five years after its release.

Reception[edit | edit source]

Upon its release, the iPad 2 received widespread acclaim for its design, improved performance, and battery life, maintaining Apple's position in the tablet market. Critics praised its thin profile and the addition of cameras, though some noted that the cameras' quality was not as high as expected.

Legacy[edit | edit source]

The iPad 2 is considered a pivotal device in the tablet industry, setting standards for future devices in terms of design and functionality. It remained in production until March 2014, making it one of the longest-produced iPads, which is a testament to its enduring popularity.
