Ice Cube (born O'Shea Jackson on June 15, 1969) is an American rapper, actor, and filmmaker. His lyrics on N.W.A's 1988 album Straight Outta Compton contributed to gangsta rap's widespread popularity. His solo albums AmeriKKKa's Most Wanted (1990) and Death Certificate (1991) were critically acclaimed for their lyrical content and political commentary. Beyond music, Ice Cube has established a successful career in cinema, starring in and producing films such as Boyz n the Hood, the Friday series, and Barbershop.

Early Life[edit | edit source]

Ice Cube was born in South Central Los Angeles, to Doris, a hospital clerk and custodian, and Hosea Jackson, a UCLA groundskeeper. He began writing raps in high school, including "Boyz-n-the-Hood" which would later be performed by Eazy-E and become a hit for N.W.A, a group Ice Cube would join.

Music Career[edit | edit source]

Ice Cube's music career began as a member of the hip hop group C.I.A., which led to his introduction to Dr. Dre and his eventual membership in N.W.A. The group's explicit lyrics and portrayal of life in South Central LA brought them both fame and controversy. Ice Cube left N.W.A in December 1989 over royalty disputes, launching a successful solo career. His albums in the early 1990s, including AmeriKKKa's Most Wanted and Death Certificate, are considered seminal works in the gangsta rap genre.

Acting Career[edit | edit source]

Ice Cube made his acting debut in the 1991 film Boyz n the Hood, a critical and commercial success. He has since built a diverse filmography, including comedies, dramas, and action films. Ice Cube also ventured into film production, founding his production company Cube Vision in 1995.
