Definition[edit | edit source]

Identifiable, in the context of data, refers to the ability to establish the identity of an individual, object, or data. This can be done through unique identifiers, such as names, social security numbers, or other unique attributes. In the context of healthcare, identifiable data often refers to identifiable health information or identifiable patient data.

Identifiable Health Information[edit | edit source]

Identifiable Health Information is any information, including demographic data, that relates to:

  • the individual’s past, present, or future physical or mental health or condition,
  • the provision of health care to the individual, or
  • the past, present, or future payment for the provision of health care to the individual,

and that identifies the individual or for which there is a reasonable basis to believe it can be used to identify the individual.

Privacy Laws and Regulations[edit | edit source]

Identifiable health information is protected under various privacy laws and regulations, including the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) in the United States. These laws and regulations set forth requirements for the use, disclosure, and protection of identifiable health information.

De-Identified Health Information[edit | edit source]

De-identified health information, in contrast, is health information that has been stripped of all identifiers that could be used to identify the individual. This information can be used for research, public health, and other purposes without the same restrictions as identifiable health information.
