Independence Hall

From WikiMD's Wellness Encyclopedia

Independence Hall is a historic building located in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, United States. It is recognized as the birthplace of the United States, as it was here that the Declaration of Independence and the United States Constitution were debated and adopted.

History[edit | edit source]

Independence Hall was completed in 1753 as the Pennsylvania State House for the Province of Pennsylvania. It became the principal meeting place of the Second Continental Congress from 1775 to 1783. The Declaration of Independence was approved there on July 4, 1776, and the design of the American flag was agreed upon there in 1777.

Architecture[edit | edit source]

The building was designed in the Georgian style by Edmund Woolley and Andrew Hamilton. It consists of a central building with belltower and steeple, flanked by two matching wings—the east wing and the west wing.

Legacy[edit | edit source]

Today, Independence Hall is a key part of the Independence National Historical Park and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It is depicted on the back of the U.S. $100 bill, as well as the bicentennial Kennedy half dollar.
