Information science

Information Science is an interdisciplinary field primarily concerned with the analysis, collection, classification, manipulation, storage, retrieval and dissemination of information. It is often associated with computer science and information technology, but it involves psychology, management and other fields. Information science studies the application and usage of knowledge in organizations, along with the interaction between people, organizations, and any existing information systems, with the aim of creating, replacing, improving, or understanding information systems.

The field of information science has a wide history spanning several decades. The modern discipline of information science can be traced back to developments in library science and documentation during the first half of the 20th century.

Information science encompasses a broad range of topics and disciplines. Some of these include: Information theory, Data management, Information systems, Information retrieval, Knowledge management, Archiving, Informatics, Information architecture, Information design, Information ethics, Information literacy, Information privacy, Information security, Information visualization, Library science, Museum studies, Records management, and Social informatics.

Information science is closely related to, and often overlaps with, the fields of computer science and information technology. In fact, many information scientists are also computer scientists, and vice versa.
Information Science and Other Disciplines[edit | edit source]
Information science also intersects with a variety of other disciplines, including psychology, management, law, health sciences, sociology, and many others. This interdisciplinary nature of the field is one of its key characteristics and strengths.
