Ingress is an augmented reality (AR) mobile game developed and published by Niantic. The game was initially released for Android devices on December 14, 2013, and later for iOS on July 14, 2014. Ingress uses the global positioning system (GPS) to locate and interact with "portals" situated at various points of interest in the real world.

Gameplay[edit | edit source]

Ingress is a location-based game that involves players, known as "agents," choosing between two factions: the Enlightened and the Resistance. The Enlightened seek to harness the power of a mysterious energy called "Exotic Matter" (XM), while the Resistance aims to protect humanity from its potential dangers.

Players use their mobile devices to locate and capture portals, which are typically located at public art, landmarks, and other points of interest. By linking portals together, players can create "control fields" over geographic areas, which contribute to their faction's score.

Factions[edit | edit source]

  • Enlightened: This faction believes that XM can uplift humanity and bring about a new era of enlightenment.
  • Resistance: This faction is wary of XM and seeks to protect humanity from its unknown effects.

Portals[edit | edit source]

Portals are the primary objectives in Ingress. They can be captured, linked, and upgraded by players. Portals are often located at public art, landmarks, and other significant locations. Players can submit new portal locations for consideration by Niantic.

Events[edit | edit source]

Ingress features various in-game events, known as "anomalies," where players from both factions gather in specific locations to compete for control of portals. These events often have significant impacts on the game's storyline and faction standings.

Storyline[edit | edit source]

The storyline of Ingress is revealed through various media, including in-game messages, comics, and novels. The narrative revolves around the discovery of XM and the ensuing conflict between the Enlightened and the Resistance.

Technology[edit | edit source]

Ingress utilizes GPS and augmented reality technology to create an immersive gaming experience. The game also incorporates elements of geocaching and urban exploration.

Reception[edit | edit source]

Ingress has been praised for its innovative use of augmented reality and its ability to encourage physical activity and exploration. It has also been credited with fostering a strong community of players.
