International Centre for Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology (ICGEB) is a unique global organization dedicated to advancing research, training, and technology transfer in genetic engineering and biotechnology to support new scientific advancements and apply them to critical issues, such as health care, agriculture, and the environment. Established as a project of the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) in 1983, ICGEB aims to promote biotechnology internationally, with a particular focus on the needs of the developing world. It operates through a network of Member States and research facilities in Trieste, Italy; New Delhi, India; and Cape Town, South Africa.

The Centre officially began operations in 1987, following the ratification of its establishment by an adequate number of signatory countries.
