Iris humilis is a species of flowering plant in the genus Iris, belonging to the family Iridaceae. It is native to parts of Asia, including China, Mongolia, and Russia. This species is known for its distinctive yellow flowers and is commonly found in steppe and forest-steppe regions.

Description[edit | edit source]

Iris humilis is a perennial herbaceous plant that typically grows to a height of 10-20 cm. The plant has a rhizomatous root system, which allows it to spread and form clumps. The leaves are narrow, linear, and grass-like, measuring up to 30 cm in length. The flowers are yellow, with a diameter of 4-6 cm, and bloom in late spring to early summer. Each flower has three large outer petals (falls) and three smaller inner petals (standards).

Habitat[edit | edit source]

Iris humilis thrives in well-drained soils and is often found in open, sunny locations. It prefers sandy or rocky soils and can tolerate dry conditions. This species is commonly found in steppe and forest-steppe regions, where it grows alongside other drought-tolerant plants.

Distribution[edit | edit source]

The natural range of Iris humilis includes parts of China, Mongolia, and Russia. It is particularly prevalent in the regions of Siberia and the Altai Mountains. The plant is adapted to cold climates and can withstand harsh winters.

Cultivation[edit | edit source]

Iris humilis is cultivated for its ornamental value and is used in rock gardens and as a ground cover. It requires minimal maintenance and is resistant to pests and diseases. The plant prefers full sun and well-drained soil. Propagation is typically done through division of the rhizomes in early spring or late summer.

Conservation[edit | edit source]

While Iris humilis is not currently listed as an endangered species, its natural habitats are under threat from human activities such as agriculture and urbanization. Conservation efforts are focused on preserving its native habitats and promoting sustainable land use practices.
