Iris potaninii is a species in the genus Iris, part of the subgenus Limniris and the series Tenuifoliae. It is a rhizomatous perennial plant native to regions in China, including Gansu, Inner Mongolia, Ningxia, Qinghai, Shaanxi, and Shanxi.

Iris potaninii has a slender, creeping rhizome that forms dense clumps. The leaves are narrow, linear, and grey-green, typically growing up to 30 cm long and 1-2 mm wide. The flowering stems are slender, reaching up to 20-30 cm in height. The flowers are usually pale yellow or cream, with a darker yellow or orange signal patch. The blooming period is from May to June.
Habitat[edit | edit source]
Iris potaninii is found in dry, rocky slopes, grasslands, and open forests at altitudes ranging from 1,500 to 3,000 meters. It prefers well-drained soils and full sun to partial shade.
Cultivation[edit | edit source]
This species is cultivated for its ornamental value in rock gardens and alpine gardens. It requires well-drained soil and a sunny position. It is hardy to USDA zones 5-8.
Taxonomy[edit | edit source]
Iris potaninii was first described by Karl Maximovich in 1880. The species is named in honor of the Russian explorer Grigory Potanin.
Distribution[edit | edit source]
Iris potaninii is distributed across various provinces in China, including Gansu, Inner Mongolia, Ningxia, Qinghai, Shaanxi, and Shanxi.
