Irvine
Irvine is a city located in Orange County, California, United States. It is a planned city, primarily developed by the Irvine Company since the 1960s. Formally incorporated on December 28, 1971, the 66 square mile city has a population of over 280,000 as of the 2020 census.

The area that would become Irvine was inhabited for several thousand years by the Gabrielino indigenous group. In the 18th century, it was claimed by Spain as part of the Alta California territory. After the Mexican-American War, the region became part of the United States. The city of Irvine was planned and developed by the Irvine Company in the 1960s and was officially incorporated in 1971.
Geography[edit | edit source]
Irvine is located in the southwestern part of Orange County, California. It is bordered by several other cities, including Santa Ana, Tustin, and Newport Beach. The city is known for its planned neighborhoods, called villages, each with distinct architectural styles and amenities.
Economy[edit | edit source]
Irvine is home to a number of corporations, particularly in the technology and semiconductor sectors. The city's top employers include University of California, Irvine, Irvine Unified School District, and Blizzard Entertainment. Irvine is also the location of the Fashion Island shopping center, one of the largest in the region.
Education[edit | edit source]
Irvine is served by the Irvine Unified School District, which operates four comprehensive high schools, several middle schools, and numerous elementary schools. The city is also home to the University of California, Irvine, which is one of the 10 campuses in the University of California system.
Culture[edit | edit source]
Irvine offers a variety of cultural and recreational activities. The city is home to the Irvine Spectrum Center, a large outdoor shopping center with a movie theater and several restaurants. The Irvine Museum houses a collection of California art from the Impressionist period.
Transportation[edit | edit source]
Irvine is served by several major highways, including Interstates 5 and 405. The city also has a public transportation system operated by the Orange County Transportation Authority. The John Wayne Airport is located nearby in Santa Ana.
