Italian Sommelier Association

The Italian Sommelier Association (Associazione Italiana Sommelier, or AIS) is a professional organization dedicated to promoting the culture of wine and the role of the sommelier in Italy. Founded in 1965, the AIS is one of the oldest and most prestigious sommelier associations in the world. The association is headquartered in Milan and operates throughout Italy, offering a range of educational programs, certifications, and events for wine enthusiasts and professionals.

History[edit | edit source]

The Italian Sommelier Association was established on July 7, 1965, by a group of wine enthusiasts and professionals who recognized the need for a formal organization to support and promote the sommelier profession in Italy. The founding members included notable figures in the Italian wine industry, and the association quickly gained recognition for its commitment to excellence in wine education and service.

Objectives[edit | edit source]

The primary objectives of the AIS are to:

  • Promote the culture and appreciation of wine and other beverages.
  • Provide professional training and certification for sommeliers.
  • Support the professional development of its members.
  • Organize events, tastings, and competitions to enhance the knowledge and skills of sommeliers.
  • Collaborate with other national and international wine organizations.

Education and Certification[edit | edit source]

The AIS offers a comprehensive educational program for aspiring sommeliers, which includes three levels of certification:

  • First Level: Introduction to wine, viticulture, and winemaking.
  • Second Level: In-depth study of Italian and international wines, including wine regions, grape varieties, and tasting techniques.
  • Third Level: Advanced training in wine service, food and wine pairing, and professional sommelier skills.

Upon successful completion of the three levels, candidates receive the title of Sommelier AIS.

Events and Competitions[edit | edit source]

The AIS organizes a variety of events and competitions throughout the year, including:

  • Vinitaly: One of the largest wine and spirits exhibitions in the world, held annually in Verona.
  • Best Sommelier of Italy: A prestigious competition that crowns the top sommelier in Italy.
  • Wine Tastings and Masterclasses: Regular events that provide members with opportunities to taste and learn about wines from around the world.

Membership[edit | edit source]

Membership in the AIS is open to anyone with an interest in wine, from beginners to experienced professionals. Members receive access to educational resources, events, and a network of fellow wine enthusiasts and professionals.
