Joanne Rowling (born 31 July 1965), better known by her pen name J. K. Rowling, is a British author and philanthropist. She is best known for writing the Harry Potter fantasy series, which has won multiple awards and sold more than 500 million copies, becoming the best-selling book series in history. The books are the basis of a popular film series, over which Rowling had overall approval on the scripts and was a producer on the final films.

Early Life[edit | edit source]

Rowling was born in Yate, Gloucestershire, England, and grew up in Chepstow, Gwent. She attended University of Exeter, where she studied French and the Classics. After graduating, she worked in various jobs, including as a researcher and bilingual secretary for Amnesty International.

Career[edit | edit source]

Harry Potter Series[edit | edit source]

Rowling conceived the idea for the Harry Potter series while on a delayed train from Manchester to London in 1990. Over the next five years, she mapped out the seven books of the series. The first novel, Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone, was published in 1997. The series concluded with Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows in 2007.

Other Works[edit | edit source]

In addition to the Harry Potter series, Rowling has written several other books. Under the pseudonym Robert Galbraith, she writes the Cormoran Strike series, a set of crime fiction novels. She has also written The Casual Vacancy, a novel for adults.

Philanthropy[edit | edit source]

Rowling supports a wide range of charitable causes. She founded the Volant Charitable Trust, which supports projects that alleviate social deprivation, particularly concerning women and children. She is also the founder of Lumos, a charity working to transform the lives of disadvantaged children.

Personal Life[edit | edit source]

Rowling married Neil Murray, a Scottish doctor, in 2001. They have two children together. She also has a daughter from her previous marriage to Jorge Arantes.

Awards and Honors[edit | edit source]

Rowling has received numerous awards and honors for her writing, including the OBE for services to children's literature, the Légion d'Honneur, and the Hans Christian Andersen Literature Award.
