J. R. Martinez
J.R. Martinez is an American actor, motivational speaker, and former U.S. Army soldier who became widely known after winning the thirteenth season of the reality television show Dancing with the Stars. Martinez suffered severe burns to over 40 percent of his body while serving as an infantryman in the United States Army during the Iraq War in 2003. Jose Rene Martinez was born on June 14, 1983, in Shreveport, Louisiana. He was raised in Hope, Arkansas, and later moved to Dalton, Georgia. Martinez's early life was marked by challenges, but he was known for his resilience and optimistic spirit.

In September 2002, Martinez enlisted in the United States Army. He was deployed to Iraq in March 2003. On April 5, 2003, Martinez was driving a Humvee in Karbala when his vehicle hit a landmine. The explosion resulted in severe burns to his face and more than 40 percent of his body. Martinez spent 34 months at Brooke Army Medical Center in San Antonio, Texas, undergoing 33 different surgeries, including skin grafts and cosmetic surgery.
