Ja'far is a male given name of Arabic origin, meaning "stream". It is most commonly associated with Ja'far ibn Abi Talib, a cousin of the Islamic prophet Muhammad, and Ja'far al-Sadiq, a descendant of Muhammad who is revered in Shia Islam as the sixth Imam.

Ja'far ibn Abi Talib[edit | edit source]

Ja'far ibn Abi Talib (died 629) was a cousin of the Islamic prophet Muhammad. He was known as "Ja'far the Flyer" because he lost both his arms in the Battle of Mu'tah and was killed in the battle. He is revered by Muslims as a martyr.

Ja'far al-Sadiq[edit | edit source]

Ja'far al-Sadiq (702–765) was a descendant of the Islamic prophet Muhammad and the sixth Imam of Shia Islam. He is revered by Shia Muslims for his religious leadership and is respected by Sunni Muslims as a transmitter of Hadith and as a jurist.
