Jackdarragh

Jack Darragh (December 4, 1890 – June 28, 1924) was a Canadian professional ice hockey player who played for the Ottawa Senators in the National Hockey League (NHL) and its predecessor, the National Hockey Association (NHA). Darragh was a key player during the early years of professional ice hockey and is remembered for his contributions to the sport and his remarkable career with the Senators.

Early Life[edit | edit source]

Jack Darragh was born in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada. From a young age, he showed a keen interest in ice hockey, a sport that was rapidly gaining popularity in Canada during the late 19th and early 20th centuries.

Career[edit | edit source]

Darragh's professional career began with the Ottawa Senators, a team he would remain with throughout his career. He made his debut in the NHA, the precursor to the NHL, and quickly established himself as a talented forward. Darragh was known for his scoring ability, playmaking skills, and versatility on the ice, often playing both forward and defense positions as needed.

During his career, Darragh helped lead the Senators to four Stanley Cup championships in 1920, 1921, 1923, and 1924. His performance in critical games, including scoring the game-winning goals in the 1920 and 1921 Stanley Cup finals, cemented his reputation as a clutch player in the postseason.

Playing Style[edit | edit source]

Darragh was known for his smooth skating, intelligent play, and sharp shooting. His ability to read the game and make decisive plays made him a valuable asset to the Senators. Despite the rough nature of early professional ice hockey, Darragh was not known for aggressive play but rather for his sportsmanship and fair play.

Death and Legacy[edit | edit source]

Tragically, Jack Darragh's life and career were cut short when he died from peritonitis on June 28, 1924, at the age of 33. His death was a significant loss to the ice hockey community and the Ottawa Senators.

Darragh's legacy lives on, and he is remembered as one of the early stars of professional ice hockey. In recognition of his contributions to the sport, Jack Darragh was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1962.
