Jacqueline Mars was born on October 10, 1939, in Arlington County, Virginia, United States. She is the daughter of Forrest Mars Sr., the founder of Mars, Incorporated. Mars grew up in a family deeply involved in the confectionery business, which eventually became her lifelong passion.
Mars attended the boarding school Miss Hall's School in Pittsfield, Massachusetts. Later, she enrolled at Bryn Mawr College in Pennsylvania, where she earned her bachelor's degree in anthropology.
