James Drury
James Drury (April 18, 1934 – April 6, 2020) was an American actor best known for his role as the title character in the Western television series The Virginian, which aired on NBC from 1962 to 1971. Born in New York City, Drury grew up in both New York and Oregon, reflecting his diverse interests and the dual nature of his later acting roles, which spanned both urban and rural settings.
Early Life[edit | edit source]
James Drury was born in New York City to a marketing manager and a university professor. He moved to Oregon with his family during his teenage years, where he developed an interest in acting. After completing high school, Drury attended the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA), where he studied drama and was involved in various theatrical productions.
Career[edit | edit source]
Drury's acting career began with small roles in films and television in the 1950s. His early work included appearances in such films as The Tender Trap (1955) and Forbidden Planet (1956). However, it was his role in The Virginian that made him a household name. As the stoic and fair-minded foreman of the Shiloh Ranch, Drury's portrayal became iconic in the genre of television Westerns.
Throughout the 1960s and 1970s, Drury continued to work in television and film, appearing in various guest roles on popular shows of the time. After The Virginian ended, he starred in the short-lived series Firehouse (1974). Despite the series' brief run, Drury's performance was well-received.
In addition to his work on screen, Drury was also known for his voice work, particularly in Western-themed documentaries and audiobooks, further cementing his association with the genre.
Personal Life[edit | edit source]
James Drury was married three times and had two sons. He was known for his private nature, rarely speaking about his personal life in public. In his later years, Drury was active in the Western film community, attending conventions and participating in interviews about his time on The Virginian.
Death[edit | edit source]
James Drury passed away on April 6, 2020, at the age of 85. His death was attributed to natural causes. Following his passing, tributes from fans and colleagues highlighted his contributions to the Western genre and his lasting legacy as a television icon.
Legacy[edit | edit source]
James Drury's portrayal of the Virginian has left a lasting impact on the Western genre. His work is remembered for its portrayal of moral integrity and justice, themes that are central to the genre. Drury's career, spanning over two decades, reflects the evolution of television Westerns and their place in American culture.
