James Graham Phelps Stokes
James Graham Phelps Stokes (March 18, 1872 – April 8, 1960) was an American millionaire socialist writer, political activist, and philanthropist. He was a prominent figure in the early 20th-century social reform movements in the United States.
Early Life and Education[edit | edit source]
James Graham Phelps Stokes, commonly known as Graham Stokes, was born into a wealthy and influential family in New York City. He was the son of Anson Phelps Stokes, a banker and philanthropist, and Helen Louisa Phelps. Stokes attended Yale University, where he graduated in 1892. He later studied at the Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons but did not complete his medical degree.
Social Activism[edit | edit source]
Stokes became deeply involved in social reform movements during the early 1900s. He was influenced by the Social Gospel movement and became a member of the Socialist Party of America. Stokes was an advocate for labor rights, women's suffrage, and racial equality. He was also involved in the settlement house movement, working closely with Lillian Wald at the Henry Street Settlement in New York City.
Marriage to Rose Pastor Stokes[edit | edit source]
In 1905, Stokes married Rose Pastor Stokes, a prominent socialist and labor activist. Their marriage was notable for bridging the gap between the wealthy elite and the working class. Together, they were active in various social and political causes, including the Industrial Workers of the World (IWW) and the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU).
Later Life and Legacy[edit | edit source]
After his divorce from Rose Pastor Stokes in 1925, Stokes continued his philanthropic work. He was involved in various charitable organizations and continued to support social reform initiatives. Stokes passed away on April 8, 1960, leaving behind a legacy of activism and philanthropy.
