James Middleton Cox (March 31, 1870 – July 15, 1957) was an American politician and media proprietor who served as the 46th and 48th Governor of Ohio, and was the Democratic candidate for President of the United States in the 1920 United States presidential election. Cox is also known for founding the media conglomerate Cox Enterprises.

Early Life and Education[edit | edit source]

James M. Cox was born in Jacksonburg, Ohio, and grew up in a rural setting. He began his career as a schoolteacher before transitioning into journalism. He eventually bought the Dayton Daily News and used it as a platform to launch his political career.

Political Career[edit | edit source]

Cox's political career began in the U.S. House of Representatives, where he served from 1909 to 1913. He was first elected Governor of Ohio in 1912 and served two non-consecutive terms from 1913 to 1915 and again from 1917 to 1921. During his tenure, Cox focused on education, agricultural development, and workers' rights, implementing several progressive reforms.

In 1920, Cox won the Democratic nomination for President, running on a platform that supported the League of Nations and other progressive reforms. His running mate was future President Franklin D. Roosevelt. However, they were defeated by the Republican ticket of Warren G. Harding and Calvin Coolidge.

After his political career, Cox focused on building Cox Enterprises, which began with his acquisition of the Dayton Daily News. The company expanded to include multiple newspapers, radio stations, and television stations, becoming a major player in the media industry.

Legacy and Death[edit | edit source]

James M. Cox's legacy is marked by his contributions to both politics and media. He is remembered for his progressive governance and for establishing a media empire that continues to influence the industry. Cox passed away on July 15, 1957, in Kettering, Ohio.
