James Madison University (JMU) is a public university located in Harrisonburg, Virginia. It was founded in 1908 as the State Normal and Industrial School for Women at Harrisonburg. The university was named after James Madison, the fourth President of the United States.

James Madison University was established in 1908 as a women's college. It was originally called the State Normal and Industrial School for Women at Harrisonburg. In 1938, the institution was renamed Madison College in honor of President James Madison. In 1977, the name was changed to James Madison University to reflect its growth and expansion into a comprehensive university.
