James P. Delgado

James P. Delgado is a prominent maritime archaeologist, historian, and author known for his extensive work in the field of underwater archaeology. He has contributed significantly to the understanding of submerged cultural resources and has authored numerous books and articles on maritime history and archaeology.

Early Life and Education

James P. Delgado was born in San Jose, California. He developed an interest in maritime history and archaeology at a young age. He pursued his passion by studying at the University of California, Berkeley, where he earned a Bachelor's degree in American History. He later obtained a Master's degree in Maritime History and Underwater Research from the University of San Francisco.

Career

Delgado's career in maritime archaeology began at the National Park Service's Submerged Cultural Resources Unit, where he worked as a historian and archaeologist. He later served as the Executive Director of the Vancouver Maritime Museum in British Columbia, Canada.

In 2006, Delgado was appointed as the Director of the Maritime Heritage Program for the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA). In this role, he was responsible for the inventory, documentation, and management of historic shipwrecks and other maritime heritage resources in the United States.

Delgado has also been involved in numerous underwater archaeology expeditions around the world, including the exploration of the Titanic wreck site and the discovery of the Carpathia, the ship that rescued the Titanic survivors.

Publications

Delgado has authored over 30 books and numerous articles on maritime history and archaeology. His works include "Adventures of a Sea Hunter: In Search of Famous Shipwrecks," "Lost Warships: An Archaeological Tour of War at Sea," and "Khubilai Khan's Lost Fleet: History's Greatest Naval Disaster."

Recognition

Delgado's contributions to maritime archaeology and history have been recognized with several awards, including the Naval History and Heritage Command's Commodore Dudley W. Knox Naval History Lifetime Achievement Award.
