James Scarth Combe (1796 – 1883) was a prominent Scottish physician and dentist, known for his contributions to the field of dentistry and his role in the establishment of dental education in Scotland.

James Scarth Combe was born in 1796 in Edinburgh, Scotland. He pursued his early education in Edinburgh, where he developed an interest in the medical sciences. Combe went on to study medicine at the University of Edinburgh, one of the leading medical schools of the time, where he graduated with a degree in medicine.
Career[edit | edit source]
Combe initially practiced as a physician, but his interest soon shifted towards dentistry, a field that was gaining recognition as a distinct profession. He became one of the early practitioners of dentistry in Scotland, at a time when the field was not yet fully established as a separate discipline from general medicine.

He was a founding member of the Edinburgh Dental Dispensary, which later became the Edinburgh Dental Hospital and School.
