JanSport
JanSport is an American brand of backpacks and collegiate apparel, now owned by VF Corporation, one of the world's largest apparel companies. JanSport is the world's largest backpack maker, and together with The North Face and Eastpak, it makes up VF Corporation's "Outdoor & Action Sports" division. The company was founded in 1967 in Seattle, Washington by Murray Pletz, his wife Janis "Jan" Lewis, and his father Norman Pletz.
JanSport's products, which include a variety of bags and outdoor gear, are sold in sporting goods stores, college bookstores, department stores, and specialty and boutique retail locations worldwide. The brand is particularly known for its durable, high-quality backpacks, which have become a staple among students, hikers, and outdoor enthusiasts.
History[edit | edit source]
JanSport began in 1967 when Murray Pletz won a design competition at the University of Washington. His prize-winning design was an adjustable aluminum backpack frame. Encouraged by this success, Pletz, along with his wife Jan and his father Norman, founded JanSport. The company's name is a combination of "Jan," from Pletz's wife, and "Sport," reflecting the brand's focus on outdoor activities and gear.
In the early years, JanSport pioneered the use of new materials and innovative designs. The brand was among the first to use nylon in the construction of backpacks, making them lighter and more durable than the traditional canvas models of the time. This innovation helped to establish JanSport as a leading name in the outdoor gear market.
In 1986, JanSport was acquired by VF Corporation, a global leader in branded lifestyle apparel, footwear, and accessories. Under VF Corporation's ownership, JanSport expanded its product line to include not just backpacks but also luggage, laptop bags, and collegiate apparel, among other items.

Sustainability is another key focus for JanSport. The brand has implemented initiatives to reduce its environmental impact, including using recycled materials in its products and minimizing waste in its manufacturing processes.
