Janet Gardner
Janet Gardner is an American rock singer and guitarist, best known as the former lead vocalist of the all-female glam metal band Vixen. Gardner's powerful vocals and dynamic stage presence played a significant role in Vixen's success during the late 1980s and early 1990s.
Early Life and Career[edit | edit source]
Janet Gardner was born on March 17, 1962, in Juneau, Alaska. From a young age, Gardner showed a keen interest in music, learning to play the guitar and sing. Her passion for music led her to join several bands during her teenage years, honing her skills as a musician and performer.
In 1983, Gardner moved to Los Angeles, California, where she eventually joined Vixen, a band that would become synonymous with the glam metal scene of the late 80s. Vixen, formed by guitarist Jan Kuehnemund, quickly gained popularity, thanks in part to Gardner's vocal abilities and the band's catchy, hard-rocking songs.
Vixen Era[edit | edit source]
Vixen released their self-titled debut album in 1988, which included hits such as "Edge of a Broken Heart" and "Cryin'." The album was a commercial success, earning the band widespread recognition and solidifying their place in the rock music scene. Gardner's voice was a key element of the band's sound, showcasing her ability to deliver powerful performances.
The band followed up with their second album, Rev It Up, in 1990. While the album contained several standout tracks, it did not achieve the same level of commercial success as their debut. Despite this, Vixen continued to tour extensively, building a loyal fan base.
Solo Career and Later Work[edit | edit source]
After Vixen disbanded in the early 1990s, Gardner focused on her solo career. She released her debut solo album in 2017, which showcased a more diverse range of musical influences and demonstrated her versatility as a musician. Gardner continued to perform live, both as a solo artist and with various bands, maintaining a presence in the rock music scene.
Legacy[edit | edit source]
Janet Gardner's contribution to the glam metal genre and her role as a leading female rock vocalist of her time have left a lasting impact on the music industry. Her work with Vixen, in particular, has been celebrated for breaking barriers in a predominantly male-dominated genre and inspiring future generations of female musicians.
