History[edit | edit source]

Japanese culture is a blend of traditional and modern influences. The country is known for its traditional arts, including tea ceremonies, calligraphy, and flower arranging. The country is also famous for its performing arts, such as Kabuki and Noh theatre.

The Japanese language is the national language of Japan. It is a member of the Japonic language family, and its relationship to other languages is debated. Japanese is written with a combination of three scripts: Hiragana, Katakana, and Kanji.

Cuisine[edit | edit source]

Japanese cuisine is based on combining staple foods, typically rice or noodles, with a soup and okazu — dishes made from fish, vegetable, tofu, etc. — to add flavor to the staple food. In the early modern era, ingredients such as red meats that had previously not been widely used in Japan were introduced.

Japan has a highly developed economy, the third-largest in the world by nominal GDP and the fourth-largest by purchasing power parity. It is also the world's fourth-largest exporter and fourth-largest importer.
