Japanese battleship Nagato‏‎

The Japanese battleship Nagato was a dreadnought battleship built for the Imperial Japanese Navy (IJN) during the 1910s. The lead ship of her class, she carried the largest naval guns available, 410-millimeter (16.1 in) weapons, and was considered one of the most powerful battleships in the world when completed.

Design and Description[edit | edit source]

The Nagato was designed by naval architect Yuzuru Hiraga. She was 221.3 meters (725 ft 8 in) long overall and had a beam of 34.6 meters (113 ft 6 in). The ship was powered by four Gihon steam turbines, each driving one propeller shaft, using steam provided by 21 Kampon water-tube boilers.

Armament[edit | edit source]

The Nagato's main battery consisted of eight 410-millimeter (16.1 in) guns in four twin turrets, two forward and two aft. The secondary armament consisted of twenty 140-millimeter (5.5 in) guns mounted in casemates along the sides of the hull.

Service History[edit | edit source]

The Nagato served as the flagship of Admiral Isoroku Yamamoto during the Attack on Pearl Harbor that began the Pacific War in December 1941. She was sunk during the Operation Crossroads nuclear tests in 1946.

Legacy[edit | edit source]

The Nagato is remembered as one of the most powerful battleships of her time and has been featured in various forms of media, including films, video games, and books.
