Jeanine Áñez Chávez (born 13 June 1967) is a Bolivian politician and lawyer who served as the 66th President of Bolivia from 2019 to 2020. She assumed the presidency following the resignation of Evo Morales and his government amid widespread protests and allegations of electoral fraud.

Early life and career[edit | edit source]

Jeanine Áñez was born in San Joaquín, Beni, Bolivia. She pursued a career in law and became involved in politics, initially serving as a member of the Constituent Assembly from 2006 to 2007, representing the department of Beni.

Political career[edit | edit source]

Áñez was elected as a Senator for Beni in 2010, representing the Social Democratic Movement. She served as the Second Vice President of the Senate of Bolivia from 2015 until 2019.

Presidency[edit | edit source]

Áñez assumed the presidency on 12 November 2019, following the resignation of President Evo Morales and his government. Her assumption of the presidency was controversial and led to significant political unrest. During her tenure, she focused on stabilizing the country and preparing for new elections. She did not run in the 2020 presidential election, which was won by Luis Arce.

Jeanine Áñez is married to Héctor Hernando Hincapié Carvajal, and they have two children. She is known for her strong stance on various political issues and her efforts to promote democracy in Bolivia.
