Jefferson County is a county located in the U.S. state of Nebraska. As of the 2010 census, the population was 7,547. Its county seat is Fairbury. The county was named after Thomas Jefferson, the third President of the United States and the principal author of the Declaration of Independence.
Geography[edit | edit source]
Jefferson County is located in the southeastern part of Nebraska, with its southern boundary on the Kansas state line. It covers a total area of 576 square miles, of which 570 square miles is land and 6.1 square miles is water.
Demographics[edit | edit source]
As of the 2010 census, there were 7,547 people, 3,100 households, and 2,063 families residing in the county. The population density was 13 people per square mile. The racial makeup of the county was 97.4% White, 0.3% Black or African American, 0.2% Native American, 0.5% Asian, 0.6% from other races, and 1.0% from two or more races. 1.8% of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.

Healthcare in Jefferson County is primarily provided by two main facilities: the Jefferson Community Health & Life and the Gardenside Long-Term Care.
Jefferson Community Health & Life[edit | edit source]
Jefferson Community Health & Life (JCH&L) is a critical access hospital located in Fairbury. It provides a full range of services including inpatient, outpatient, and emergency care. The hospital has 17 beds and employs over 200 healthcare professionals. In 2020, JCH&L served over 3,000 patients.
Gardenside Long-Term Care[edit | edit source]
Gardenside Long-Term Care is a nursing home facility also located in Fairbury. It offers a variety of services including skilled nursing care, rehabilitation services, and memory care. The facility has 40 beds and is staffed by a team of dedicated healthcare professionals.

Jefferson County is home to several public and private schools. The largest school district in the county is Fairbury Public Schools, which serves students in grades K-12.
Transportation[edit | edit source]
Jefferson County is served by U.S. Route 136, Nebraska Highway 4, and Nebraska Highway 15. The county also has a small airport, Fairbury Municipal Airport, located 3 miles northeast of Fairbury.
