Jeffrey P. Koplan (born March 1, 1945) is an American physician and public health administrator. He is best known for his tenure as the Director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) from 1998 to 2002.
Early Life and Education[edit | edit source]
Koplan was born in New York City, New York. He earned his B.A. degree from Yale University in 1966 and his M.D. degree from the Mount Sinai School of Medicine in 1972. He also holds a M.P.H. degree from the Harvard School of Public Health.
Career[edit | edit source]
Koplan began his career in public health as an epidemiologist with the CDC in 1972. He has held various positions within the organization, including serving as the Director of the National Center for Chronic Disease Prevention and Health Promotion.
Director of the CDC[edit | edit source]
In 1998, Koplan was appointed as the Director of the CDC by then-Secretary of Health and Human Services Donna Shalala. During his tenure, he oversaw the agency's response to several major public health issues, including the 1999 West Nile virus outbreak and the 2001 anthrax attacks.
Post-CDC Career[edit | edit source]
After leaving the CDC in 2002, Koplan joined Emory University as the Vice President for Global Health. He also served as the Director of the Emory Global Health Institute.
