Jerry York
Jerry York (born Jerome Bailey York on June 22, 1938, and died March 18, 2010) was an American business executive known for his turnarounds of major corporations. He served as CFO of IBM and Chrysler and was a member of the board of directors of Apple Inc..
Early life and education[edit | edit source]
York was born in Memphis, Tennessee. He earned a bachelor's degree in General Science from the United States Military Academy at West Point in 1960 and an MBA from the University of Michigan in 1963.
Career[edit | edit source]
York began his career at Chrysler in 1979, where he served as Chief Financial Officer from 1990 to 1993. He is credited with the financial turnaround of the company during this period. In 1993, he left Chrysler to become the CFO of IBM, where he again played a key role in a major corporate turnaround.
In 1995, York left IBM to join the investment firm Kohlberg Kravis Roberts & Co. (KKR). He served as a member of the board of directors of Apple Inc. from 1997 until his death in 2010. At Apple, he was instrumental in the company's successful shift to a consumer electronics business model.
York was also a member of the board of directors of Exide, a battery manufacturing company, and Harwinton Capital, an investment company. He served as the CEO of Harwinton Capital from 2000 until his death.
Death[edit | edit source]
York died on March 18, 2010, from a cerebral hemorrhage. He was 71 years old.
Legacy[edit | edit source]
York's legacy in the business world is marked by his successful turnarounds of major corporations. His work at Chrysler and IBM is often cited as a model for corporate financial restructuring.
