Jets

From WikiMD's Wellness Encyclopedia

Jets are a type of aircraft that use jet engines to propel themselves forward. They are a common form of transportation in the modern world, used for both commercial and military purposes.

History[edit | edit source]

The concept of jet propulsion dates back to the ancient Greeks, but the first practical jet engine was not developed until the 20th century. This was achieved by Frank Whittle and Hans von Ohain, who independently developed the first operational jet engines during the late 1930s.

Types of Jets[edit | edit source]

There are several different types of jets, each with their own unique characteristics and uses. These include:

  • Commercial Jets: These are the most common type of jet and are used to transport passengers and cargo around the world. They are typically large, with multiple engines and a wide body to accommodate passengers and cargo.
  • Military Jets: These jets are used by the military for a variety of purposes, including air-to-air combat, ground attack, and reconnaissance. They are typically faster and more maneuverable than commercial jets.
  • Private Jets: These jets are owned by individuals or companies and are used for personal or business travel. They are typically smaller than commercial jets and can often land at smaller airports.

Jet Engines[edit | edit source]

The jet engine is the heart of any jet aircraft. It works by sucking in air at the front, compressing it, mixing it with fuel and igniting it. The resulting hot gas is then expelled out the back, propelling the aircraft forward.

There are several types of jet engines, including:

  • Turbojet: This is the simplest type of jet engine. It has a single set of compressor and turbine blades.
  • Turbofan: This type of engine has a large fan at the front that sucks in more air than the turbojet. Some of this air bypasses the engine core and is expelled directly out the back, providing additional thrust.
  • Turboprop: This type of engine has a propeller at the front, which provides most of the thrust. The jet engine is mainly used to drive the propeller.
