Jijona

Jijona or Xixona is a town and municipality located in the Comarca of Alacantí, in the province of Alicante, Spain. The town is well-known for its production of Turron, a traditional Spanish sweet made from honey, sugar, egg whites, and almonds.

The history of Jijona dates back to the Neolithic period, with archaeological evidence suggesting the presence of early human settlements. The town was later inhabited by the Iberians, Romans, and Moors, each leaving their unique cultural imprint on the region.

Jijona is situated in the foothills of the Sierra de la Carrasqueta mountain range. The town's geographical location provides it with a mild Mediterranean climate, ideal for the cultivation of almond trees, a key ingredient in the production of Turron.

The economy of Jijona is primarily based on the production of Turron and ice cream. The town is home to the Consejo Regulador IGP Jijona y Turrón de Alicante, the regulatory council for the Protected Geographical Indication (PGI) of Jijona and Alicante Turron.
