Etymology[edit | edit source]
The name Jim is a diminutive form of the name James. The name James is the English form of the Late Latin name Iacomus, a variant of the Biblical Latin name Iacobus, from the Hebrew name Jacob (Hebrew: יַעֲקֹב, Yaʿqob). The name Jacob comes from the Biblical story of Jacob's birth where he came out holding the heel of his twin brother Esau (Genesis 25:26). The Hebrew word for "heel" is עֲקֵב ('aqeb), so Jacob is often interpreted as "may he protect" or "supplanter".
