Jim Kelly (May 5, 1946 – June 29, 2013) was an American martial artist, athlete, and actor. He gained fame in the early 1970s for his roles in martial arts films, most notably Enter the Dragon alongside Bruce Lee. Kelly was known for his athletic prowess, charismatic screen presence, and his distinctive Afro hairstyle, which became iconic in the martial arts film genre.

Jim Kelly was born in Paris, Kentucky, and grew up in a racially segregated America. He attended the University of Louisville, where he played football and studied physical education. His interest in martial arts began during his college years, and he eventually left school to pursue a career in martial arts.
Martial Arts Career[edit | edit source]
Kelly trained in Shorin-ryu karate and became a skilled practitioner, winning several championships in the early 1970s. He opened his own dojo in Los Angeles, where he taught karate and self-defense.
Acting Career[edit | edit source]
Jim Kelly's breakthrough role came in 1973 when he was cast in Enter the Dragon, one of the first major martial arts films produced by a Hollywood studio. His performance as Williams, a martial artist invited to a tournament on a mysterious island, was well-received and led to further roles in films such as Black Belt Jones (1974), Three the Hard Way (1974), and The Tattoo Connection (1978).

Jim Kelly is remembered as a pioneering African American actor in the martial arts film genre. His roles often portrayed strong, confident characters who challenged racial stereotypes. Kelly's influence extended beyond film, inspiring a generation of martial artists and actors.

Kelly was married twice and had one daughter. He was also an avid tennis player and competed in professional senior tennis tournaments.

Jim Kelly passed away on June 29, 2013, in San Diego, California, from cancer. He was 67 years old.
