JioMart

From WikiMD's Food, Medicine & Wellness Encyclopedia

JioMart is an Indian online grocery delivery service, launched by Reliance Industries in 2020. It is operated by Reliance Retail, the retail arm of Reliance Industries, and is available across 200 cities in India.

History[edit | edit source]

JioMart was announced in August 2019 by Mukesh Ambani, the chairman of Reliance Industries. The platform was officially launched in May 2020, during the COVID-19 pandemic, when the demand for online grocery delivery services was high due to lockdown restrictions.

Business Model[edit | edit source]

JioMart operates on an online-to-offline (O2O) business model. It connects local grocery stores with customers via an online platform. Customers can order groceries through the JioMart app or website, and the order is fulfilled by a nearby partner store. This model allows JioMart to leverage the existing supply chain and infrastructure of local stores, while providing them with a larger customer base.

Partnerships[edit | edit source]

In July 2020, JioMart announced a partnership with WhatsApp, allowing customers to order groceries through the messaging app. This partnership leverages the wide user base of WhatsApp in India, and provides a convenient ordering platform for JioMart customers.

Competition[edit | edit source]

JioMart competes with other online grocery delivery services in India, such as BigBasket, Grofers, and Amazon Pantry. However, its O2O business model and partnerships give it a unique position in the market.

Criticism[edit | edit source]

JioMart has faced criticism for its impact on small local stores. Some critics argue that the platform could lead to the monopolization of the grocery market, and harm small businesses.
