Joan Reede was born in Boston, Massachusetts. She pursued her undergraduate studies at Brown University, where she earned a Bachelor of Science degree. Reede then attended Mount Sinai School of Medicine, obtaining her Doctor of Medicine (MD) degree. Furthering her education, she completed a Master of Public Health (MPH) at the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health and a Master of Business Administration (MBA) at Boston University.

Reede began her career as a pediatrician, but her passion for addressing health disparities led her to focus on academic medicine and public health. In 1990, she joined Harvard Medical School and has since held various leadership roles. As the Dean for Diversity and Community Partnership, Reede has been instrumental in creating initiatives that support minority students and faculty.
