Joaquim Forn i Chiari (born 1 April 1964) is a Catalan politician and lawyer. He is a member of the Catalan European Democratic Party (PDeCAT) and has held various political offices in Catalonia, including serving as the Minister of the Interior of Catalonia.

Early Life and Education

Joaquim Forn was born in Barcelona, Catalonia. He studied law at the University of Barcelona, where he earned his degree. During his time at university, Forn became involved in political activism, particularly in support of Catalan independence.

Political Career

Forn's political career began in the early 1990s when he joined the Convergence and Union (CiU) coalition. He was elected to the Barcelona City Council in 1999, where he served in various capacities, including as Deputy Mayor for Security and Mobility.

Minister of the Interior

In July 2017, Forn was appointed as the Minister of the Interior of Catalonia by then-President Carles Puigdemont. In this role, he was responsible for overseeing the Mossos d'Esquadra, the Catalan police force. His tenure was marked by the controversial 2017 Catalan independence referendum, which led to a significant political crisis between the Catalan government and the Government of Spain.

Imprisonment

Following the 2017 Catalan independence referendum and the subsequent declaration of independence by the Parliament of Catalonia, Forn was arrested by Spanish authorities. He was charged with rebellion and sedition and was held in pre-trial detention. In October 2019, Forn was sentenced to 10 years and 6 months in prison for his role in the independence bid.

Personal Life

Joaquim Forn is married and has two children. He is known for his commitment to the Catalan independence movement and has been a vocal advocate for the rights of Catalans to self-determination.
