Johannes Leimena (6 March 1905 – 29 March 1977) was a prominent Indonesian politician and physician who played a significant role in the early years of Indonesia's independence. He served in various ministerial positions and was a key figure in the Indonesian National Revolution.

Early Life and Education[edit | edit source]

Johannes Leimena was born in Ambon, Maluku, on 6 March 1905. He pursued his education in medicine at the Geneeskundige Hoogeschool in Batavia, which is now known as Jakarta. Leimena graduated as a physician in 1930 and began his career in the medical field, working in various hospitals across the Dutch East Indies.

Political Career[edit | edit source]

Leimena's political career began during the Japanese occupation of the Dutch East Indies, where he became involved in the nationalist movement. After Indonesia declared its independence in 1945, Leimena was appointed as the Minister of Health in the first Indonesian cabinet.

Role in the Indonesian National Revolution[edit | edit source]

During the Indonesian National Revolution, Leimena was a member of the Indonesian delegation in several key negotiations with the Dutch, including the Renville Agreement.

Leimena's diplomatic skills were instrumental in the negotiations that eventually led to the recognition of Indonesian sovereignty.

Ministerial Positions[edit | edit source]

Leimena held various ministerial positions throughout his career. He served as the Minister of Health multiple times, and also held the position of Deputy Prime Minister. His contributions to the health sector were significant, as he worked to improve public health services in the newly independent nation.

Later Life and Legacy[edit | edit source]

In his later years, Leimena continued to be active in politics and public service. He was a member of the Indonesian Christian Party and served as its chairman. Leimena was also involved in various social and religious organizations, promoting interfaith dialogue and national unity.
