John Hickenlooper is an American politician and businessman who served as the Governor of Colorado from January 11, 2011, to January 8, 2019. He is a member of the Democratic Party.
Early Life and Education[edit | edit source]
Hickenlooper was born on February 7, 1952, in Narberth, Pennsylvania. He attended Wesleyan University, where he earned a bachelor's degree in English in 1974. Later, he received a master's degree in geology from the University of Colorado Boulder in 1980.
Political Career[edit | edit source]
Hickenlooper began his political career as the mayor of Denver, Colorado, serving from 2003 to 2011. During his tenure as mayor, he focused on economic development, environmental sustainability, and improving public transportation.
In 2010, Hickenlooper successfully ran for the position of Governor of Colorado. He was re-elected in 2014 and served two terms in office. As governor, he prioritized job creation, renewable energy, and expanding access to healthcare.
During his time in office, Hickenlooper also gained national attention for his bipartisan approach to governance. He worked across party lines to pass legislation on issues such as gun control, marijuana legalization, and criminal justice reform.
Post-Gubernatorial Career[edit | edit source]
After leaving office, Hickenlooper announced his candidacy for the 2020 Democratic presidential primaries. However, he later dropped out of the race and instead ran for the United States Senate in Colorado. He won the Democratic nomination and went on to defeat the incumbent Republican senator in the 2020 general election.

Hickenlooper is married to Robin Pringle. They have one son together.
