John Micklethwaite (born 11 August 1962) is a British journalist who has served as the editor-in-chief of Bloomberg News since 2015. Prior to this role, he was the editor-in-chief of The Economist from 2006 to 2015. Micklethwaite is known for his insightful analysis of global economic and political issues and has authored several books on these topics.

Early life and education[edit | edit source]

John Micklethwaite was born in London, England, on 11 August 1962. He was educated at Ampleforth College, a prestigious Roman Catholic boarding school in North Yorkshire. He went on to study at Magdalen College, Oxford, where he earned a degree in history. During his time at Oxford, Micklethwaite developed a keen interest in politics and economics, which would later shape his career in journalism.

After graduating from Oxford, Micklethwaite began his career in banking, working for Chase Manhattan Bank in London. However, his passion for writing and analysis soon led him to pursue a career in journalism.

The Economist[edit | edit source]

Micklethwaite joined The Economist in 1987 as a financial correspondent. Over the years, he held various positions within the publication, including business editor, United States editor, and editor of the newspaper's Lexington column, which focuses on American politics and society. In 2006, Micklethwaite was appointed editor-in-chief of The Economist, succeeding Bill Emmott. During his tenure, he oversaw the expansion of the publication's digital presence and its global reach.

Bloomberg News[edit | edit source]

In 2015, Micklethwaite was appointed editor-in-chief of Bloomberg News, a leading global business and financial information and news leader. At Bloomberg, he has focused on integrating the company's vast data resources with its journalistic output, enhancing the depth and breadth of its coverage.
