John W. Kern

John Worth Kern (December 20, 1849 – August 17, 1917) was an American lawyer and politician who served as a United States Senator from Indiana from 1911 to 1917. He was a member of the Democratic Party and played a significant role in the politics of his time.

Early Life and Education

John W. Kern was born in Alto, Indiana, and attended the local schools. He later went on to study law at the University of Michigan, where he graduated with a degree in law.

Career

After completing his education, Kern began practicing law in Kokomo, Indiana. His political career started in the Indiana State Senate, where he served from 1893 to 1897. Kern gained national prominence when he was chosen as the Democratic nominee for Vice President of the United States in the 1908 election, running alongside William Jennings Bryan. Although they were defeated, Kern's profile in the Democratic Party rose significantly.

In 1910, Kern was elected to the U.S. Senate. During his tenure, he was known for his advocacy of progressive policies and was a supporter of President Woodrow Wilson's New Freedom legislative program. He was involved in significant legislation, including laws related to labor rights and antitrust measures.

Death and Legacy

John W. Kern died on August 17, 1917, in Asheville, North Carolina. His contributions to Indiana and national politics are remembered for his progressive stance and efforts to reform laws in favor of the working class.
