John Wheeler Dowden

John Wheeler Dowden (29 June 1840 – 30 January 1910) was a prominent Scottish bishop and ecclesiastical historian. He served as the Bishop of Edinburgh in the Scottish Episcopal Church from 1886 until his death in 1910. John Wheeler Dowden was born in Cork, Ireland, on 29 June 1840. He was the son of John Dowden, a clergyman, and Alicia Bennett Wheeler. Dowden was educated at Trinity College Dublin, where he excelled in his studies, earning a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1863 and a Master of Arts degree in 1866. His academic prowess laid the foundation for his future contributions to ecclesiastical scholarship.
