Jonas
Jonas is a name that has been used in various cultures and contexts throughout history. It is a common male first name in many Western countries, and is also a surname. The name has biblical origins, as it is the Greek form of Jonah.
Etymology[edit | edit source]
The name Jonas is derived from the Hebrew name Yonah, which means "dove". In the Old Testament, Jonah was a prophet who was swallowed by a whale after trying to escape God's command to prophesy to the city of Nineveh. The name was adopted by the Greeks as Iōnas (Ιωνας), and from there it entered Latin and other European languages.

The name Jonas has also been used in various works of fiction. For example, it is the name of the protagonist in Lois Lowry's dystopian novel The Giver. In the television series Dark, Jonas Kahnwald is one of the main characters.
