Jonathan's Coffee-House was a significant establishment in London during the 17th and 18th centuries. It is historically notable for being the original site of the London Stock Exchange.

History[edit | edit source]

Jonathan's Coffee-House was established in 1680 by Jonathan Miles. It quickly became a popular meeting place for merchants and brokers who traded in stocks and commodities. The coffee-house was located in Exchange Alley, a narrow street in the City of London.

Role in the Development of the London Stock Exchange[edit | edit source]

In the late 17th century, the coffee-house became a central hub for the trading of stocks and shares. The informal nature of the trading at Jonathan's Coffee-House laid the groundwork for the establishment of a more formal stock exchange. In 1698, John Castaing began to issue a list of stock and commodity prices from Jonathan's Coffee-House, which is considered one of the earliest forms of a stock exchange.

The coffee-house was destroyed in the Great Fire of London in 1748 but was rebuilt shortly thereafter. In 1773, the brokers who frequented Jonathan's Coffee-House decided to form a formal club, which eventually evolved into the London Stock Exchange.

Legacy[edit | edit source]

Jonathan's Coffee-House is remembered as the birthplace of the London Stock Exchange, one of the world's oldest and most significant financial institutions. The coffee-house itself no longer exists, but its legacy continues through the ongoing operations of the London Stock Exchange.
