José Alvalade
José Alvalade (10 October 1885 – 19 October 1918) was a prominent Portuguese sportsman and one of the founders of Sporting Clube de Portugal, commonly referred to as Sporting CP or simply Sporting. He played a significant role in the establishment and development of the club, which has become one of the most successful and popular sports clubs in Portugal.
Early Life[edit | edit source]
José Alfredo Holtreman Roquette, known as José Alvalade, was born in Lisbon, Portugal. He was the grandson of the Viscount of Alvalade, a title that would later inspire the name of the club's stadium, the Estádio José Alvalade. From a young age, José showed a keen interest in sports, particularly football.
Founding of Sporting CP[edit | edit source]
In 1906, José Alvalade, along with his friends Francisco da Ponte and Henrique de Almeida Leite Júnior, decided to create a new sports club. They were dissatisfied with the existing clubs and wanted to establish an organization that would provide better conditions for athletes. With financial support from his grandfather, the Viscount of Alvalade, José and his friends founded Sporting Clube de Portugal on 1 July 1906.
Contributions to Sporting CP[edit | edit source]
José Alvalade was instrumental in the early development of Sporting CP. He served as the club's first treasurer and was deeply involved in the construction of the club's facilities. His vision and dedication helped lay the foundation for what would become one of Portugal's most successful sports institutions. The club's motto, "Effort, Dedication, Devotion, and Glory," reflects the values that José Alvalade instilled in the organization.
Legacy[edit | edit source]
José Alvalade's legacy is deeply ingrained in the history of Sporting CP. The club's stadium, the Estádio José Alvalade, is named in his honor. The stadium has been the home of Sporting CP since its inauguration in 1956 and has undergone several renovations, including a major redevelopment for the UEFA Euro 2004 tournament.
