José Antonio Meade
José Antonio Meade Kuribreña (born 27 February 1969) is a Mexican politician, economist, and lawyer. He has held several high-ranking positions in the Mexican government and was the candidate for the Institutional Revolutionary Party (PRI) in the 2018 presidential election.
Early Life and Education[edit | edit source]
Meade was born in Mexico City. He is the son of Dionisio Meade y García de León and Lucía Kuribreña. He studied economics at the Instituto Tecnológico Autónomo de México (ITAM), where he graduated with honors. He later earned a law degree from the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM) and a Ph.D. in economics from Yale University.

Public Service[edit | edit source]
Meade has held various positions in the Mexican government. He began his career in public service at the National Bank of Rural Credit (Banrural) and later worked at the National Bank of Mexico (Banamex).
Secretary of Energy[edit | edit source]
In 2011, Meade was appointed Secretary of Energy by President Felipe Calderón. During his tenure, he focused on modernizing the energy sector and promoting renewable energy sources.
Secretary of Finance and Public Credit[edit | edit source]
Meade served as Secretary of Finance and Public Credit twice, first under President Felipe Calderón from 2011 to 2012 and then under President Enrique Peña Nieto from 2016 to 2017. In this role, he was responsible for overseeing the country's economic policy, managing public finances, and implementing fiscal reforms.
Secretary of Foreign Affairs[edit | edit source]
From 2012 to 2015, Meade was the Secretary of Foreign Affairs. He worked on strengthening Mexico's diplomatic relations and promoting international trade.
Secretary of Social Development[edit | edit source]
In 2015, Meade was appointed Secretary of Social Development. He focused on reducing poverty and improving social welfare programs.
2018 Presidential Election[edit | edit source]
In 2017, Meade was announced as the presidential candidate for the Institutional Revolutionary Party (PRI) for the 2018 election. Despite his extensive experience in public service, he was defeated by Andrés Manuel López Obrador of the National Regeneration Movement (MORENA).
Personal Life[edit | edit source]
Meade is married to Juana Cuevas Rodríguez, and they have three children. He is known for his academic achievements and his commitment to public service.
