Josep Rull i Andreu (born 2 September 1968) is a Catalan politician and member of the Catalan European Democratic Party (PDeCAT). He has held various political positions within the Government of Catalonia and has been an active figure in the Catalan independence movement.

Early Life and Education[edit | edit source]

Josep Rull was born in Terrassa, a city in the province of Barcelona. He studied law at the Autonomous University of Barcelona (UAB), where he became involved in student politics and developed an interest in Catalan nationalism.

Political Career[edit | edit source]

Rull's political career began in the youth wing of the Convergence and Union (CiU) coalition, known as the Nationalist Youth of Catalonia (JNC). He quickly rose through the ranks, becoming a prominent figure within the organization.

Member of the Catalan Parliament[edit | edit source]

In 1997, Rull was elected as a member of the Parliament of Catalonia, representing the province of Barcelona. During his tenure, he served on various committees and was known for his advocacy of Catalan independence and social policies.

Minister of Territory and Sustainability[edit | edit source]

In January 2016, Rull was appointed as the Minister of Territory and Sustainability in the government of Carles Puigdemont. In this role, he was responsible for overseeing infrastructure, environmental policies, and urban planning in Catalonia.

Involvement in the Catalan Independence Referendum[edit | edit source]

Rull played a significant role in the events leading up to the 2017 Catalan independence referendum. Following the referendum, which was deemed illegal by the Spanish government, Rull, along with other Catalan leaders, faced legal repercussions. In 2018, he was arrested and later sentenced to prison for his involvement in the independence movement.
