Joseph B. Showalter (Pennsylvania Congressman)

Joseph B. Showalter (February 11, 1851 – December 3, 1932) was an American physician, businessman, and politician who served as a Republican member of the United States House of Representatives from Pennsylvania.

Early life and education[edit | edit source]

Joseph Benton Showalter was born in Smithfield, Pennsylvania. He attended the public schools and later graduated from West Virginia University in 1874. Showalter pursued a medical degree and graduated from the College of Physicians and Surgeons in Baltimore, Maryland in 1876.

Medical career[edit | edit source]

After completing his education, Showalter began practicing medicine in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. He was also involved in various business ventures, including the oil and gas industry, which was burgeoning in Pennsylvania during that period.

Political career[edit | edit source]

Showalter's political career began at the state level. He served in the Pennsylvania State Senate from 1887 to 1891. His tenure in the state senate was marked by his advocacy for public health and infrastructure improvements.

In 1896, Showalter was elected to the United States House of Representatives, representing Pennsylvania's 25th congressional district. He served in the Fifty-fifth and Fifty-sixth Congresses from March 4, 1897, to March 3, 1901. During his time in Congress, Showalter was known for his work on health-related legislation and his support for the development of the nation's infrastructure.

Later life and death[edit | edit source]

After leaving Congress, Showalter returned to his medical practice and business interests. He remained active in the community and continued to contribute to public health initiatives. Joseph B. Showalter passed away on December 3, 1932, in Washington, D.C., and was interred in the Union Dale Cemetery in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.

Showalter's contributions to both medicine and politics left a lasting impact on his community and the state of Pennsylvania. His work in the oil and gas industry also played a role in the economic development of the region.
